Management Gave Fans Nothing to Celebrate

即便個人已經接受了 Dodgers 在 07 年 out of race 的事實，但最近每一件、任何一件發生在 LA 的 move，還是沒有任何一樣讓人看起來順眼的。

First，Dodgers 碰到了 unbalanced schedule 裡最瘋狂的部份：08/26 在 Shea Stadium 與 Mets 的比賽由於成為 ESPN 的 Sunday Baseball，所以於當地晚間 0805 開打，經過 3 小時的鏖戰，Dodgers 離開美東，加上時差，回到 LA 的時間不會早於 PT 的 AM 0500，然後 PT 的 PM 0705 又得在自己家裡迎接來訪的 Nats。不只如此，09/02 結束在 San Diego 的比賽後，Dodgers 又得開拔到美中，假設他們 "能夠" 在 PT 的 PM 0900 搭上飛機前往 Chicago，到達時不會早於 CT 的 AM 0400，然後在 CT 的 PM 0605 又要於 Wrigley Field 鬥上 Cubs。

Second，在 Padres 將 David Wells 給 release 掉之後，我忘了自己在哪裡回覆過 "Wells 一定會成為 Dodger"，事實上也不出所料！而 Wells 08/26 於 Shea Stadium 的比賽後，官網把 old Boomer 給捧上了天，好像 Ned Colletti 押到寶一樣，但如果比較 08/25、08/26 這兩場比賽的 SP Stults 與 Wells 的表現：(P：Pitches、BFP：Batters Faced)

我看不出這兩組數字有什麼決定性的差異，make things worse，Wells 放棄了他 7-game suspension 的上訴，這至少會讓他錯過一次先發的機會，so sit tight, Stults...

Third，Dodgers 從 MLW (Major League Waiver) 上 acquire 了 "魂斗羅" -- Esteban Loaiza，A's 這回沒有把 Loaiza 抽回來重新談條件，而是靜靜的把 Loaiza 剩下的合約渡給了 Dodgers，但讓人氣憤的是顯然 Dodgers 並沒有在做預算緊縮，那麼 07 年 draft 以小幅差距而被放掉的 Kyle Blair 該做何解釋？

兩天前，BP 的 Christina Kahrl 說 Loaiza 的 acquisition 是 Colletti 幾個較好的 move 時，個人並不願承認，但是在 Randy Wolf 確定 out of the 07 season -- 也等於宣告 Dodgers 不可能 pick up 他 08 年的 club option 之後，我相信 Loaiza 的到來 "的確可能" 有些許正面的效果，畢竟以 Kuo 的傷病史，即便他 08 年已經 out of option，Dodgers 也不敢巴巴的留一個 rotation spot 給他，但總的說來，acquire Loaiza 衝了天也只是 "不滿意、但勉強可以接受" 的 move。

這麼一來，整個 07 年球季對個人來說就只剩下 roster expanded 值得期待了，但 09/01 在 Petco Park 的比賽，瞄了一眼 starting lineup 與 bench 後，就很想拿刀殺人....

Chin-Lung Hu (胡金龍)？D.J. Houlton？Johnathan Meloan & Chad Moeller？這算什麼？用亂數決定？Where is my Andy La Roche & Tony Abreu？

Dodgers 的 management 如果還認為他們有機會進 playoff，那 Hu 就不是首選，這不是說他不該被昇上來，而是除非 Hu 被安排去守 3B，然後打得比 Hillenbrand 好。眼下 Jeff Kent 和 Rafael Furcal 的位置擺明了是不會被撼動的，Hu 最可能的出場空間是在 late-inning game 上來加強守備，而我們都曉得這在加強戰力方面並不 critical。

Speaking of D.J. Houlton，基本上如果 Dodgers 沒有領先 10 分， Little 大概也沒這個膽派 Houlton 來中繼，rotation spots 又由 Penny、Lowe、Billingsley、Loaiza & Wells 所 occupied，那咱們急著在 roster expanded 的首日把一個用不到的投手叫上來是為了哪樁？

至於 Johnathan Meloan 當初如果早點叫上來，Betemit 也不會拿去換了一袋上面貼著 "Scott Proctor" 標籤的球；Chad Moeller？I don't know，也許下一次 Mike Lieberthal 可以不用等到 14th inning 才上來代打？

Non-sense, totally non-sense! And that's the management we're talking about...let alone Louis Gonzalez 和 Shea Hillenbrand 到這個節骨眼都還先發，Grady Little 和 Ned Colletti 這兩個 sorry-a*ses 的腦袋裡到底裝了什麼東西？或者說 Dodger Fans 是造了什麼孽？在 playoff 無望的現在，看到一堆無用的 veterans 霸佔了 starting lineup，該上來的人也沒有上來....

如果有任何理由 Dodgers 進不了 07 年的 playoff，Ned Colletti 和 Grady Little 就是讓你拿 A-plus 的答案。

所以 Hu 在 09/01、2007 如願上到 ML，但 Hu 原本不在 40-man roster，同時 ML 規定在 08/31 時要決定 playoff eligible list。那麼如果 Dodgers 在 07 年進入 playoff，Hu 究竟有沒有資格參加？

這個問題的答案是：看情況。

我整理了一下之前和幾位 columnists 的通信，在 MLR (Major League Rule) 裡，規定 "Players Eligible for Post-season" 的部份在 40(a)，條文是這麼說的：

To be eligible for the playoffs, a player must be active for that team (or on its disabled list, bereavement list, suspended list, or military list) as of Aug. 31.

也就是說在 08/31 的時間點，即便在 40-man roster 上但處於 "optional assignment" 的球員，也無法參加 playoff，從這個角度來看，Hu 當然沒有參加 playoff 的權利。

但 Dodger Fans 也許會想到 James Loney 的例子，他在 06 年 08/18 被 optioned，09/01 於 roster expanded 的時候才被 called-up，最後卻於 Division Series 的 Game 3 取代 Nomar 先發 1B？

Ok，Loney 的例子其實這沒有違反遊戲規則，因為 MLR 40(a) 有一條但書：

If an eligible player is unable to play in a postseason series because of injury, his club may request permission from the Commissioner to replace him with a player from the club's Minor League system.

也就是說在 06 年的 831 時，Dodgers DL (傷兵名單) 上的球員事實上是 eligible for playoff 的，但是到 playoff 來臨時，Loney 取代了某一位 DL 上的球員而成為 Division Series 的正選球員。話雖如此，並不是任何人都可以因傷而隨便取代原本 eligible for playoff 的球員，這裡的限制有二：

• Player must have been on a Minor League roster for the club in question on Aug. 31 (and remained in the organization through the end of the regular season).


• An injured pitcher may only be replaced by a pitcher. And a non-pitcher may only be replaced by a non-pitcher -- and they don't have to play the same position.

所以第二項的條款說明 Loney 在 06 年取代了 Dodgers 某位於 831 時仍在 DL 上 -- for example, Jayson Werth -- 的 positional player；而 Hu 即便在 831 前都不是 Dodgers 40-man roster 上的一員，但可以適用第一項條款於 playoff 出場，前提是 Hu 不僅要得到教練團的青睞，也要取代某位在 DL 上的 positional player。

Nevertheless, a better question for Taiwan baseball fans is: the odd for the Dodgers to clinch a playoff spot in 07 is very, very slim.

Moreover，大家不妨 recall 一下 07 年 831當天的 transaction moves，在 Padres 與 Tribes 的部份：

Cleveland Indians
Recalled OF Brad Snyder from Triple-A Buffalo and placed him on the 15-day disabled list.

San Diego Padres
Recalled INF Oscar Robles and LHP Ryan Ketchner from Triple-A Portland; Placed Robles on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist tendon sheath tear and placed Ketchner on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder rotator cuff tendinitis.

Mark Shapiro 與 Kevin Tower 不是發神經的在 831 這天把球員 called-up 後隨即放入 DL，這麼做都只有一個原因：為了 playoff 的 eligible list 或是為了於 playoff roster 上置換 pitcher 或 positional players 在調度上的 flexibility。

By the way，個人探得的消息是 "MLR is unpublished"，雖然每個 club 都有副本，但他們都毫無理由的把 MLR 當成 classified 來對待，個人雖然有一小部份，距完整仍有段很大的距離。想深入瞭解的人不用費心去求 Google 大神，但如果真找得到，請不吝與大家分享，謝謝。
