Say Hello to Playoff

這是在 9 月 29 日對上 Giants 獲勝後，Dodgers 的 Russell Martin 所留下的 quote。他就像是 Dodgers 的 ironman mascot，自從這位 Canadian 成為 Dodgers 的 starting backstop 後，Dodgers 的戰績是 24-game above 0.500，同時他自 9 月 8 日起已經連蹲了 20 場。

Martin 應當還記得 Maddux 來到 LA 的時候，他時常漏掉這位大投手的球，弄得 Maddux 只好和他說 "Hey kid! Don't move your mitt, I will get my balls in."。Martin 照做了，然後他開始享受與 HOFer 搭檔的味道 -- "tremendous"！現在，他只需要和 Maddux 把最後一片拼圖歸位。

挾著 Sep. 28 的 Top 9th rally 與 home plate umpire John Hirschbeck 的 "generous strike zone"，Maddux 只需要 71 球就照顧了 Giants 7 innings；加上 rarely contributed 的 Lugo 擊出了 RBI double、Broxton and Saitoh close the door -- 18 Giants were retired in row。

And the Dodgers Clinch the 2006 playoff!!

在個人的 Blog 裡看到這樣的 "文體" 也許有點奇怪，因為這種東西其實到處都讀得到，我也不想再著墨太多。香檳噴完後，我們必須回歸現實想想 "moving forward" 的事，就像 Maddux 的獲勝感言一樣：

"Hopefully we can play for another month. You know I mean..."

必須提醒的是：Dodgers 目前的 manager 是 Grady Little。各位想必還記得他當初在 Boston 是怎麼丟掉工作的 -- 他不顧 Theo Epstien 要他注意 Pedro Martinez 的 pitch count、而不是 play by hunch 的建議，最後讓 Red Sox 於 03 年的 ALCS 中落敗，也讓他丟了飯碗。

除了 Little，加上 Ned Colletti 擔任新 GM，這等於是 "two points for old school"，也代表了短暫的 stathead 時代在 Dodgers 的終結。

Colletti 的評價是值得被商榷的，playoff 結束後我們還有很多的時間來討論，現在不是做這件事的時候。至於 Little 呢？相信 06 年看著 Dodgers 一整季的 fans 也不難發現：除了一些 rookie 有了出頭的機會，Little 依然堅持著 play by hunch 的原則，以他用 Lugo batting 3rd 的安排 (Perhaps he wants to have the so-called triple lead-off man, my ass..) 就多少可以看出來，雖然這一點個人一直為 Little 做了些辯護，像是 Batting order is not that important 的理論，但是在分分必爭的 playoff，regular season 的搞法未必不會得到報應。

Sabermetric 畢竟是用於大樣本的事件，在 playoff 裡很多的 assessment 都必須重新評估，playoff roster 的決定也是一項學問。而在 NLDS 的對手尚未完全確定前，我們也暫時把這個部份往後 "摔" 個幾天，今天就先來講講故事。

回想一下 05 年的 NLCS 第五戰：Cardinals 的 Pujols 驚天一彈把 Astros 的 closer Brad Lidge 擊沈，當時的情況糗到連 "player of the game" 都已經打出來卻還被 Pujols 硬是 "turned all things upside down"。

個人提過，當時這個場面讓我想到 88 年 WS 第一戰的 Kirk Gibson，當時 Gibson 傷到連跑步都辦不到，但 Lasroda 讓他上場 pinch hit，而從 A's 的 closer Dennis Eckersley 手中擊出了一支也是 "turned all things upside down" 的 walk-off homer。

Gibson 其實並不是什麼很值得 Dodger Fans 懷念的好人，對大部份的 fans 而言，他甚至是某種程度的 a**-hole，但對於那種 heroic 的場面，大家也不會輕易忘掉。只不過真正留在大家記憶裡的恐怕是 Vin Scully 當時的那句 "Look who's coming up..." 以及在大喊 (其實對爺爺來說，也沒什麼大喊就是了) "High fly ball into right field, it i~~~s...GONE!!" 之後隔了數分鐘的那句淡淡的 "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened"。

換句話說，88 年這個 classic scene 一共包含了兩個令人難忘的要素：其一當然是 Gibson (別忘了 05 年他還擔任 Tigers 的 hitting coach 而隨隊回到 Dodger Stadium 時，現場就給了他一個 standing ovation。)，其二就是 Vin Scully 爺爺的聲音。

而 06 年的今天，爺爺依舊在 Dodgers 的主播台上陪伴著每一個 Dodger Fan，所以 "classic" 的要素已經具備了一個，而另一個呢？

如果說現在的 Dodgers 有一位 dead left calf、sprained right knee and strained oblique 的 player，相信大家一定知道我在指誰。Yes! It's Nomar Garciaparra。

Nomar 在 06 年 regular season 的倒數第二個星期就有過兩次相當 "clutch" 的演出，尤其是 9 月 18 日那支 Bottom 10th 的 2-run walk-off shot，如果你忘了當時爺爺說了些什麼，不妨回顧一下：

"A high fly ball to left field, it is a way out and gone. The Dodgers win it, 11-10. Uh~~~~...un-be-lievable!!."

然後依然靜了數分鐘，爺爺才慢條斯理的說出下一句：

"I forgot to tell you. The Dodgers are in first place."

坦白講，當 Nomar 擊出那支 walk-off homer 時，我第一個反應是 "Oh...Nomar, you lucky f**k..."，直到爺爺的最後一句話出口後，我才真的笑了出來，這是因為 88 年那個 classic 的畫面與聲音又從記憶裡浮了上來。當然，朋友在事後向我提到 Nomar 這支 "驚彈" 時，我只回了一句 "Just being heroic doesn't mean you are good enough!"。

個人不喜歡 Nomar 是一回事，但這種場面又有誰能不愛？而 06 年的 playoff 看起來 Nomar 如果不嗑藥的話，即使先發只怕也是累贅，But talking about being heroic, Nomar 也許是 the best candidate，也許 06 年的 playoff 能夠再一次讓我們見識到所謂的 "modern classic"。

Well, I know this kinda request is a little bit too luxury. But hey, We're the Dodgers. The Dodgers always play Hollywood style, don't they?

Or should I say "shall we"?
