LA Times：Colletti Should Choose Sacrifice Over Surrender

一切的導火線似乎是 Little 的那句 "I could be doing better."。

Inside the Dodgers 是隊上的 PR director (中文應該叫 "公關處長"...吧？) Josh Rawitch 在主筆的，而 LA Times 的那篇則是前任的 "Fire DePodesta!" cheering leader Bill Plaschke 的東西，看看兩人為 731 non-waiver trading deadline 的對應方式隔空較勁是很少見的事，尤其在 LA Times 成為操作 Dodgers 的幕後黑手之後。

Rawitch 對於 Plaschke 的 "White Flag Theory" 是有點感冒，他強調：

If Ned, Kim, Roy and the group could get Carlos Lee or Alfonso Soriano or Dontrelle Willis or Barry Zito or pick-your-impact-player in exchange for lower-level prospects or Triple-A guys that aren't valued as highly as these [Martin-Ethier-Broxton-Kemp] guys, something tells me we'd see those big names in Dodger blue tomorrow morning.

更有趣的是這一句：

If we can get a quality starting pitcher for a bag of balls, trust me, Ned will pull the trigger.

這或許代表的是：高層終於 "間接" 承認 "long-torso Hendrickson" 不是個 quality starting pitcher 的証明，只是當初最好的籌碼 -- either Navarro or Martin -- 也已經變成了數袋球，期待我們也拿出數袋球去尋找類似 Dodgers 這樣的苦主恐怕是不容易的。認真的考慮，也許我們需要的是 Adam Sandler's Remote。

至於 Plaschke 對於 Colletti 處理 731 大限的看法則是：

With only one postseason win in 18 years, making the playoffs will be enough. It was always enough when Colletti was in San Francisco, wasn't it?

這或許是 Plaschke 唯一說對的 "半段話" -- 我指的是後半段。Colletti 的老師 Brian Sabean 向來以選秀權換取 signing FA 出名，再說目前的 Dodger Farm 也根本不是出自 Colletti 之手，對他而言，那可能只是一堆高額籌碼而不是未來 Dodgers 的 blue print，個人則有很強烈的感覺是 GM 大人不會因為目前的 farm depth 而改變他的行事風格。

要說 Plaschke 的態度是 "短視近利" 似乎也不盡然，畢竟 prospects 的 attrition 對任何球隊來說都難以掌握，有時候把一些 top prospects 弄出家門並不盡然是錯誤的做法；只不過要說歡迎 Rawitch 的反應倒也未必，731 對於具有 competency 的球隊來說本來就是很重要的一個期限，這等於是為 playoff 做 last spurt，不要忘了 04 年 -- 近 10 年來唯一的一次打進 playoff 與 近 18 年來唯一的一場 playoff win -- 都和 731 脫不了關係。Yes, Steve Finely, I bet you still remember his "clutch crown walk-off grand slam".

如果把 regular season 連同 last offseason 來合計，高層可說至少有整整 9 個月的時間來評估與修補球隊，Colletti 對這最後幾天的機會已經放棄了嗎？先數數看 Chuck Tiffany、Edwin Jackson、Dioner Navarro、Blake Johnson and Julio Pimentel 等等 prospects，加上 Duaner Sanchez、Steve Schmoll、Jae Seo、Odalis Perez，Dodgers 究竟從這些交易掉的人裡得到了什麼回饋？

To be honest, maybe just Elmer Dessens, let alone how much he can do for Dodgers still remains to be seen.

Rawitch 說得好：拿 Odalis 換回了 Dessens 總比放上 unconditional released waiver 然後吃下他所有的 contract remaining 要好。個人認為這只是推託之辭！Odalis 所犯下的錯誤並不是不可原諒的，高層連 Hendrickson 這種 softy tosser 都能忍，對於 Odalis 的 early season struggle 卻看不下去？這完全是雙重標準！當然 Odalis 的嘴砲是狠了點，但如果 Colletti 不是出於好心來替 Odalis 找一個新天地的話，這筆交易連積陰德都談不上！

從另一個角度來想：拿一個 29 歲的 SP 加一堆現金去換一個 35 歲的 RP，前提上就已經荒謬至極！歸根究底，也許真的就像 Odalis 所說的：他根本沒有得到合理的上場機會，而讓 Dodgers 陷入交易 Odalis 的困境的正是自作自受的 Little 與 Colletti！這是個人在 06 年的第幾次寫到這件事...已經算不清楚了。

也因此在 Rawitch 與 Plaschke 的交鋒裡，前者是找理由為 GM "善後"，後者則是已經失去了理智的鬼吼，並沒有太多重點可言。我始終認為 Dodgers 足以拿下 06 年的 NL West，當然這和 Colletti 在 offseason 的大手筆沒什麼關係，也不認為現階段 Colletti 把咱們的 top prospects 砸下去就能找到什麼 difference maker，要緊的是 GM 大人已經浪費了太多的機會，他不是 "cannot make things different"，而是已經 "ran out of source"。

After all, of two evils, Dodgers should choose the least one.

或許 "hold still" 對目前已經宣告出局的 Dodgers 是一個比較好的選擇 (Yes, I'd be glad to see A-Rod wear blue! Maybe that's the only person on earth can knock Izzy the f**k out from Little's mind.)。話雖如此，這不代表 Little 現階段已經無計可施而只能坐以待斃。在非常時刻，就應該使出非常手段。

個人認為球員在 major 與 minor 是完全不同的兩回事。打個粗略的比方：major leaguers 可能在經驗的累積與技巧的磨鍊是 7:3，過了 career peak 後也許就變成 10:0；而 minor leaugers 在經驗累積與技巧磨鍊上或許應該是 2:8 甚至 1:9。

對任何一位 minor leaguer，從 High-A 到 Triple-A 的難度也許就像我們的無名指、中指與食指的長度 -- 差距不大，但跳進 major 後，也許就像是食指與拇指的長度差 -- a big, big leap。具體一點的講法是昇上 major 之後，無論在 minor 打了多久的比賽，"經驗值" 都會瞬間 "歸零"。

這也是為什麼我們會有像 CCF (陳金鋒)、Tim Hamulack 這類只有 minor 的成績能看，到了 major 就什麼都不是的 "Quadruple-A player"。以 CCF 為例，他在 Vegas 超過 0.9 的 OPS 可能有 0.2 是來自於長時間在 minor 打滾的經驗，昇上 major 後這 "0.2" 的經驗歸零，也就讓他成為一位極度平凡的 replacement level player。

也就是說：如果要在 minor 與 major 間做一個 translation，"pure skill" 可能會比那些數字更容易轉換為 "outhit" 的來源。

在已經失去 playoff caliber 的現在，Little 如果要找尋 difference maker，farm 裡頭應該有一大票才是！他應該做的是 dump Lofton、dump Izzy、dump Ramon...whoever, you name it！以 newbies 為主體出擊，這麼一來不僅讓 Dodgers 在剩下的球季可以完完全全放手一搏，也能吸引更多的 True Dodger Fans 對 06 年剩下球賽的興趣，畢竟那些 prospects 不是拿來晾在 minor 裡的。

Could Little be doing better? Hard to say, but He is the one who can make things differently.
